AvePoint Cloud Backup and Fly: ready for the EWS shutdown?
Short answer: AvePoint Cloud Backup and Fly use Microsoft Graph by default since the August 2026 releases. Archive, group and public folder mailboxes (and sovereign clouds) still go over EWS, so keep AvePoint on the allow list only if you protect those.
⚠ Depends on the product or version · vendor statements checked 26 Oct 2026
Deadline: Exchange Online blocks EWS by default from October 2026 (tenants are switched to
EwsEnabled False, rollout to late April 2027) and turns it off for good on 1 April 2027, with no exceptions.
Exchange Server on-premises is not affected.
Status
Graph by default since August 2026; EWS still used for archive, group and public folder mailboxes.
App IDs in the EWS usage report:
c21d796d-56a5-4305-a7df-047371fa9fd7b14c93d6-47fe-4ace-afcd-006fc1fbfabb34be87c0-bd08-47ab-8ecf-38f6340592f3
What to do
- Update to the current AvePoint release.
- If you back up archive, group or public folder mailboxes, keep the AvePoint IDs on the allow list.
- Ask AvePoint how those mailbox types are handled after 1 April 2027 (Microsoft's Graph gaps list still includes public folders).
More than one app? Run the free read-only script: it names every app still calling EWS in your tenant.
Allow-list it safely
Setting EwsAllowedAppIDs replaces the whole list, so adding one ID on its own removes every other app.
Read the current list first, then write the merged list:
Get-OrganizationConfig -RetrieveEwsOperationAccessPolicy | Format-List EwsEnabled,EwsAllowedAppIDs
Set-OrganizationConfig -EwsEnabled $true -EwsAllowedAppIDs "<current IDs>,<new ID>"
Changes to the list take up to 24 hours. A blocked call returns HTTP 403 with the header X-EWS-Policy-Reason.
The free script prints the merged command for every app in use (it never runs it).
