“SOA Serial Number Format is Invalid” – what it means
Verdict: Harmless on managed DNS. Usually harmless. The checker expects a date-style serial (YYYYMMDDnn), which RFC 1912 only recommends. Managed DNS hosts such as Cloudflare use other numbering, and you can't change it. It has no effect on email or SEO.
What the warning checks
The SOA record's serial number tells secondary name servers when the zone changed. Tools like MxToolbox read it as a date: a serial such as 2418325892 becomes "year 2418, month 32" and fails their format test.
Does it hurt email delivery?
- RFC 1912 §2.2 calls
YYYYMMDDnnonly "the recommended syntax", and RFC 1912 is an informational document, not a standard. - The serial only matters to secondary servers, which compare it with serial arithmetic (RFC 1982). Any number in range works.
- Cloudflare creates the SOA record itself; its API has no serial field, so no plan can change it. Cloudflare's own zones show the same warning.
What to do
- Nothing to do if your DNS is at Cloudflare, Route 53, Google Cloud DNS or a similar managed host.
- Only if you run your own BIND/PowerDNS primary with secondaries: use a date-style serial and raise it on every change.
- Spend the time on what does affect delivery: SPF, DKIM and DMARC – check your domain.
Check what actually matters
SPF, DKIM and DMARC decide whether Gmail, Outlook and Yahoo accept your mail.
After the fix, send a test email to see SPF, DKIM and DMARC pass on a real message, then keep an eye on it: free DMARC monitoring shows every service that sends mail as your domain and which ones fail, in plain English.
